Sth about Flash 8 that I dislike

Filed under: Using Flash — betaruce @ 9:29 pm

Generally I must say Flash 8 is very very cool~ so it takes me so much time to think of what I dislike…..
the most obvious one is not enough examples given in the help doc for those new AS. Honestly, I did have some problem in understanding the BitmapData class initially and I cannot find adequate examples in the help doc.

Besides, the speed and CPU usage of Flash 8 seems have no improvement at all to me, and it still consumes many memory and ram…maybe that’s only because of beta? or just because my computer is too slow? I’m not sure….anyway I hope the official release will tell me that I was wrong :)

Some “popular” functions that ppl are looking forward to are still absent in Flash, e.g. DoubleClick, 3D classes, etc. Mike Downey did explain to us last time why no 3D is added to Flash and I totally agree with him. I think Flash do not need to have 3D functions like Shockwave, but I think it is OK to have 3D classes in AS, and I believe Flash Player can still handle.

Some ppl complain that FLV cannot be played alone and they must be loaded into Flash to be viewed. I agree that this is very inconvenient to ppl who always need to work with video.

So that’s about it. What do you guys think?

  1. Absolutely agree. Some cool features, but mostly toooooooooo much of marketing. I’m upset…

  2. geez…

As for 3D, I think flash’s waaaay too slow for that using softrender, but there are several classes out there.

  3. There are a few standalone flv players out there. One good one I know of here:

Flash doesn’t need 3D just yet. You can program it yourself if you need it. No need to include the extra code in the player at this point.

As for the help docs, not sure you should be commenting on those, since the product isn’t even released yet.

  4. I’m still dissapointed that they didn’t implement the code collapsing thing. Awfull!

Ow, will they be shipping on monday, september 12th as they promised when I ordered?

  5. as you guys can see, there are some flv players provided by other parties. So in other words, it means there’s really a need to have such a player. Of course you may argue that some parties do it already so MM may not need to do so….but anyway it’s not a big problem to me as I not work on videos so often~

As for 3D, again, I think there is a need for a 3D class as so many ppl are making their own one….rendering AS 3D in Flash is a different kind of presentation and usage of 3D when compared with other applications. But of course, agian you can argue that we can write our own our download others….anyway~~~

for the help doc, well I’m not sure~ hope there will be improvements~

  6. you can hardly complain about documentation at this point - the prodcut hasn’t even shipped yet !!!!!!!

  7. Regarding docs - hope it won’t take them another year to ship “full documentation” 8.2 release… aaargh!

  8. I haven’t seen any docs out yet… my guess is that those are beta documents, which are (like most beta products) not in a finished state. Are you sure that info should be communicated at this point in a public way?
